Application Project Plan (APP) Planning Sheet

date and timeline for implementation:

Name: Barbara Melby and Kathy Starks

Briefly describe your tentative APP.
Students will look at household cleaners to determine ingredients, effects, and how they are marketed and sold to the public.

Tentative Title:
You Can Be Too Clean

Target Audience:
High school AP Chem/Chemistry students

Curriculum Goals:
Students will be able to analyze substances at the molecular level.
Students will understand how chemicals affect their bodies and the environment.

Media Literacy Goals:
Students will be able to decode product packaging for different messages both overt and subliminal (color, text, "creature images" (i.e. scrubbing bubbles), etc.).
Students will be able to decode advertising for different messages both overt and subliminal.

Other Goals:
Students will know how to use a wiki to gather and present information.

Proposed Activities:
This will be a multi-day activitity. As we continue planning, we will have more specifics related to the activity (how long, which day in the unit, materials used, etc.)

Students will:
1. Pick a cleaning product (instructors may bring some from home, or purchase at grocery store)

2. Analyze the product packaging (instructors will model this step and the next step)

3. Analyze product's advertising

4. List active ingredients, esp. those that are harmful, and list health effects (using online MSDS sheets)

5. Test pH, solubility in water, flammability (only if safe!!), toxicity relative to "bacteria cultures"

6. Report out their findings about product (perhaps on a wiki?).
Wiki pages will be set up with a table template for students to fill in
Table entries will include name, analysis of packaging, active ingredients, ph, solubility, toxicity, and a notes section

Extra credit 7. Create new commercial for product
30 second Animoto

Assessment/Evaluation (how will you know your APP works to meet your goals?):
Student report will indicate an understanding of how the chemicals in each cleaner effect a person's health. Student report will also indicate an understanding of how the product packaging and advertising works to reassure buyers that the cleaner will be effective without harmful side effects. Extra credit video will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of how advertising works, while creatively re-imagining advertising.

Resources/Support that will help you in your development of the APP:
Cleaning products
Computers and access to internet (Netbooks? Lab time? Schedule in the library?)
Access to MSDS sheets (link available on library Pathfinder)
Access to YouTube (via instructor computer)
Handouts for taking notes re: ingredients, etc.

Difficulties/Obstacles to developing your APP:
Lack of computer availability
Lack of access to YouTube
Potential hazard of using caustic chemicals (parental permission slips needed)
Finding common planning time!!

Planning Steps:
we'll get back together and determine the specifics regarding when we will do this and how many days it will take
